Joí Dean

Journalist & Copywriter

About Me

My name is Joí Dean and I completed my first year of law school at the University of Toledo College of Law. While at law school I was a member of the Student Bar Association and International Law Society. While being a member of the International Law Society I had the opportunity to travel to NYC to attend International Law Weekend where I met attorneys from across the globe.

This summer I had the opportunity to use my legal knowledge as a 1L in my everyday life as a legal intern for Lucas County Children Services. Whether I was in the court room or in the office writing a permanent custody motion, I was constantly using my legal research and writing skills.

Prior to attending law school, I worked for Cincinnati Public Radio as a freelance journalist where I was constantly pitching new ideas and writing articles on a weekly basis. Before starting my career as a freelance journalist, I received a master's certificate in marketing and I gained experience in the world of research as I obtained my bachelor's degree in journalism.

Over the course of 6 years, I have published a wide array of articles with The News Record (a student led newspaper at UC), UC News, Cincinnati Magazine, Dayton Daily News and Cincinnati Public Radio.

Below are a few of my articles that show my versatility as a writer.

UC grad finds passion in telling Black women’s stories

Q: As a Black woman, what adversities have you had to face in the industry?

Victorian: It's a really interesting thing that the majority of publishers tend to be men— at least in my experience, there are editors and writers who tend to be women. So, there's a lot of fight I think in trying to prove that you understand the audience when you are the audience. It's always odd to me. People doubt that and question your expertise—you are the reader. And I've also been encouraged to create content, m

UC grad realizes dream of community impact during COVID

When she was an undergraduate at the University of Cincinnati, Nasrien E. Ibrahim, M.D., was influenced by the diverse community around her.
